Timing is everything, and it can certainly lead to sleepless nights of worry and a big sigh of relief, all in the one rushed month before departing for Italy!
My first ever professional cycling contract with Team Valdarno is going to be a steep learning curve! The team is stacked with champions, including 2009 road World Champion, Tatiana Guderzo, and the team road bike is Corratec, built up with SRAM Red (yay!)
Of course, a great TT bikehas been a priority for me and something I have specified as a personal equipment choice in my contract. After a satisfying and successful 2009 season riding the Cervélo P3, a series of circumstances (involving international time zones, customs and minor insomnia ) played out, and I was presented with a pretty incredible opportunity.
I'll be riding a Parlee TT bike, painted up in my team colours, shipped over from the US and built up by Tim (and supervised by moi!) at Cycling Edge in Melbourne. I am very excited (and relieved!) to be on such a light, aero and beautiful looking frame. Did I mention it was light....

So my sweet new front end, my SRAM powerglide TT chainrings with SRM and a lovely Red gruppo will be assembled on the azurro blue frame this coming week and I can take it for a spin before departing Melbourne on the 9th March.
A big thanks to Tom and Parlee, Peter at Cycling Edge and Rob Eva at SRAM Australia for all his hard work and half wheeling me through the Dandenongs when I'm on the verge of the Black Lung!
Updates on how it handles on the Geelong course will be kept terribly secret, of course! ;)

It's important to have great equipment, and equally important to have a good relationship with those sponsors and distributers who are able to provide the stuff to make you go faster!
So I'm very fortunate (and goddamn excited) to be starting the 2010 season with a brand new wheel sponsor in Edge Composites, generously provided by Peter at Cycling Edge in Melbourne. I tried the 65's last week for the first time when we did some recon of the Worlds TT course in Geelong. They tested rather nicely in the wind tunnel the following day, too! Next stop will be the extremely light and precise 25's which allegedly ride themselves...
With the UCI providing very strict guidelines on the use of aero bars in international time trials, I wanted to ride the best legal bars in the world. Ultimate Sports Engineering have already had some extraordinary riders storm to victories with their Tula aero bars, least of not being the dominant performance of Kristin Armstrong in the UCI Road World Championships in Mendrisio in September, 2009.
The great staff at BikeBox in Moorabbin have given me a set of these totally sleek bars to build up on to my new TT bike! Grazie mille!
US pedal manufacturers Speedplay have also come to the party, supplying me with some Zero titanium pedals in Azurro blue to match my new Team Valdarno colours, so now I get to have the same level of performance as the champions (well, maybe from the ankles down, I'm not Kristin yet!!)

Sure, the funding has been cut, the days are less, but never fear.... what we lose in race days, we gain in driving time!

Hello all!
Just a short note to say that I was awarded Victorian Cyclist of the Year last night. Yes, it's true, Cadel Evans and Leigh Howard aren't winning the REAL races in China or Ballarat!
I wasn't able to attend the dinner in Melbourne, but I recorded a short speech for them to play and St Kilda Cycling Club President, Mel Jacobsen, was there to accept the award on my behalf.
I would like to extend a very big thanks to all of you for your continued support, encouragement, fine equipment and product over the past year. Travelling, racing and training in many countries and on many roads can often be boring, tiring and difficult. But this year in particular has been one of improvement, a great National team, and some great results.
I have 4 weeks until I fly over to Europe to race Route de France, which is just like the men's Tour de France but without the fame, the notoriety, the fanfare, the crowds, the prize money, the podium girls, the drug busts... oh and The Texan.
So, thank you to:
Donna Rae-Szalinski at cycleedge
Bernard Schreiber of Scody Clothing
Darryl and Steph Griffiths of Shotz Sports Nutrition
Rob Hurley at Gemini Bicycles for Cervelo
Rob and Jason at SRAM
City of Melbourne Active Sports and Recreation Grants
Sheridan and Paul at Oakley eyewear
Davide at Italiatech for SMP saddles
Dr Tammie Ebert at the Australian Institute of Sport
Australian Sports Commission
Antho, David, Dave and Ingrid at CBD Cycles Stu Sanders at Ballarat Cycle City Malachi Moxen at Spoke(n) Raoul Luescher and the staff at the Monash wind tunnel
St Kilda Cycling Club
Ciao!
